Shopify has three main plans for online stores. Most new stores should start on Basic and upgrade only when the numbers justify it. Here's what each plan costs, what you actually get, and the hidden costs worth budgeting for.

Which plan should beginners start with?
Start with the Basic plan. It has everything you need to launch a real store, process orders and start selling. The limits (fewer staff accounts, simpler reports and slightly higher fees) rarely matter when you're starting out.
Consider Grow once your store is selling consistently and you need better reporting to see where sales come from, or once lower card rates would save you more than the price difference.
What about Shopify Starter?
Shopify also offers a Starter plan at around $5/month. It gives you a simple way to sell through social media and links, but no full online store. It suits creators who already have an audience. For anyone who wants a real store, start with Basic.
Hidden costs to know about
- Third-party payment fees: if you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a percentage fee on each order, lower on higher plans. Use Shopify Payments where it's available to avoid it.
- Apps: many useful apps charge a monthly fee. Budget for a small app stack as you grow, and cancel what you don't use.
- Themes: premium Shopify themes are a one-time purchase. Shopify's free themes are genuinely good to start with, or use a free WithCommerce design.
- Domain: buy one through Shopify or connect one you already own from any registrar.
